Derek Tharp, Ph.D., CFP®, CLU®
Derek is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ with over six years of experience helping clients make financial decisions and manage their wealth. Derek graduated magna cum laude Iowa State University with a B.S. in Finance and a minor in Economics. Derek also earned an M.F.C.S. with an emphasis in Family Financial Planning from Iowa State before completing his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Kansas State University. While studying at Kansas State, Derek was awarded the Cary M. Maguire Fellowship in Applied Ethics with The American College of Financial Services, a Visiting Dissertation Fellow with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, and the Robert O. Herrmann Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Council on Consumer Interests. Derek is currently an Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Southern Maine.
Derek regularly contributes to the wealth management section of the Wall Street Journal’s Experts Blog. He also blogs at Nerd’s Eye View, which is a leading industry blog for financial planners. Derek’s financial planning research has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Retirement and Journal of Personal Finance. He has also coauthored a chapter in the textbook Financial Therapy: Theory, Research, and Practice. Derek has been quoted in financial publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Investment Advisor Magazine, Investor’s Business Daily, and Investment News. Derek lives in the Portland, Maine area with his wife, daughter, and black lab. He also regularly visits family (and serves clients) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
